Gadjah Mada Aerospace Team (GMAT) Raih Juara Kedua pada Kompetisi CanSat 2020

Tim Narantaka yang merupakan bagian dari Gadjah Mada Aerospace Team (GMAT) UGM berhasil meraih 2nd place (peringkat dua dunia) pada United States Annual Student CanSat Competition 2020. Kompetisi yang diselenggarakan oleh American Astronautical Society (AAS) tersebut, merupakan kompetisi yang rutin diadakan dengan misi berbeda setiap tahunya. CanSat Competition 2020 memiliki misi Delta Wing Glaider, dimana setiap tim yang ikut berpartisipasi harus mampu untuk menciptakan wahana muatan roket yang dapat mengirimkan data atmosfer dan separasi pada ketinggian tertentu. Sebagai informasi, Narantaka terdiri dari mahasiswa Elektronika dan Instrumentasi FMIPA UGM serta mahasiswa-mahasiswa lain dari Fakultas Teknik dan Sekolah Vokasi UGM dengan Catur Atmaji, S.Si., M.Cs. yang merupakan dosen Departemen Ilmu Komputer dan Elektronika sebagai faculty advisor (dosen pembimbing).

Pada Cansat 2020, tim GMAT harus melalui rangkaian seleksi ketat sebelum akhirnya berhasil menuju babak final. “Beberapa tahap yang telah kami lalui adalah tahap Registrasi dan Preliminary Design Review (PDR) kemudian diakhiri dengan tahap Critical Design Review (CDR). Pada tahap registrasi terdapat ratusan tim dari seluruh dunia yang ikut serta. Namun, pada tahap akhir hanya tersisa empat puluh tim saja yang berhak lolos menuju final.” ujar Muhammad Nur Ilmi, mahasiswa Elektronika dan Instrumentasi angkatan 2018.

Sejak tahun 2019, tim GMAT telah memulai riset dan pengembangan wahana secara fisik untuk mempersiapkan kompetisi ini. Pengembangan wahana dilakukan melalui beberapa tahap seperti desain, pemilihan material dan manufaktur. “Kami melakukan beberapa uji kelayakan dan uji fungsional prototype wahana sebelum dihasilkan wahana fungsional yang mampu menyelesaikan misi dengan baik. Persiapan dari jauh hari ini bertujuan agar tim kami lebih siap untuk mengikuti kompetisi.” ujar Catur Atmaji, S.Si., M.Cs., selaku kordinator dosen pembimbing tim GMAT.

Pengumuman pemenang kompetisi yang sedianya akan diselenggarakan di Virginia, Amerika Serikat ini dilakukan secara virtual pada hari Selasa, 16 Juni 2020. Jalannya acara ini dipandu oleh Jim Way, Executive Director American Astronautical Society, dengan diawali ucapan terima kasih kepada pihak juri dan pihak sponsor, dilanjutkan dengan pemaparan singkat dari keynote speaker, yaitu Charles Bolden, mantan administrator NASA dan mayor jenderal Angkatan Laut Amerika Serikat, serta telah terbang dalam 4 misi luar angkasa.

Dalam proses meraih prestasi ini, Tim Narantaka GMAT beranggotakan Kenrick Tjandra, Indra Budi Setyawan, Muhammad Dyffa, Mario Jaya, Wildan Purnomo, Mahatma Wisesa, Nico Renaldo, Luqman Alhelmy, Muhammad Nur Ilmi, dan Nafisah Hasya dan dibimbing oleh Catur Atmaji, S.Si., M.Cs. dan didukung oleh Dr. I Made Miasa, S.T., M.Sc yang ikut berperan aktif dalam memberikan masukan dan saran kepada tim selama rangkaian kompetisi berlangsung.
