Mahasiswa Magister Ilmu Komputer UGM Tingkatkan Akurasi Deteksi Parasit Malaria dengan Transformasi Warna LAB

Yogyakarta, 13 Juni 2025 – M. Shafri Syamsuddin, mahasiswa Program Studi Magister Ilmu Komputer Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), berhasil mengembangkan pendekatan berbasis kecerdasan buatan (AI) untuk meningkatkan akurasi deteksi jenis dan siklus hidup parasit malaria pada citra mikroskopis. Penelitian ini mengeksplorasi pengaruh transformasi ruang warna (color space) dan teknik ekstraksi fitur terhadap performa model deep learning dalam mengenali parasit malaria. Penelitian ini dilakukan di bawah bimbingan Dr. Dyah Aruming Tyas, S.Si. dan hasil penelitian ini akan dipresentasikan pada konferensi internasional Asia Machine Learning and Data Science (AMLDS) 2025 yang akan digelar di Tokyo, Jepang pada 19–21 Juli mendatang.

Penelitian ini memanfaatkan dataset MP-IDB (Microscopic Parasite-Image Database) dan menguji dua model deteksi objek mutakhir, yakni YOLOv8 dan Faster R-CNN. Shafri menerapkan konversi gambar ke beberapa ruang warna seperti LAB, CMY, dan HSL, serta menggabungkannya dengan teknik peningkatan fitur visual seperti Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG), Local Binary Pattern (LBP), dan ORB (Oriented FAST and Rotated BRIEF).

Hasil eksperimen menunjukkan bahwa transformasi ke ruang warna LAB memberikan peningkatan performa paling signifikan dan konsisten, dengan peningkatan akurasi deteksi hingga 10–15% dibandingkan tanpa transformasi warna. Kemampuan LAB dalam memisahkan kecerahan dan warna membuat model AI lebih mudah mengenali karakteristik visual parasit malaria yang sulit dibedakan secara manual. Uji tambahan pada dataset IML-Malaria juga menunjukkan hasil yang konsisten, dengan peningkatan akurasi sebesar 8%.

Sebaliknya, penggunaan teknik peningkatan fitur tradisional seperti HOG dan LBP hanya memberikan kontribusi kecil, yang menunjukkan bahwa model deep learning modern sudah cukup andal dalam mengenali pola spasial tanpa perlu tambahan fitur manual. Penelitian ini juga menampilkan visualisasi deteksi AI pada citra mikroskopik, yang menunjukkan deteksi lebih akurat ketika ruang warna LAB digunakan.

Penelitian ini turut berkontribusi dalam mendukung pencapaian Tujuan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan (SDGs). Penerapan transformasi ruang warna untuk meningkatkan akurasi deteksi parasit malaria sejalan dengan SDG 3 yang menekankan pentingnya kehidupan sehat dan kesejahteraan, khususnya melalui peningkatan akses terhadap diagnosis penyakit yang lebih akurat dan terjangkau. Selain itu, penggunaan metode AI yang inovatif dan efisien mendukung pencapaian SDG 9 terkait industri, inovasi, dan infrastruktur, dengan menghadirkan solusi teknologi cerdas dalam bidang kesehatan yang sebelumnya sangat bergantung pada observasi manual. Tidak hanya itu, kolaborasi interdisipliner antara ilmu komputer, teknologi digital, dan dunia medis dalam penelitian ini juga mendorong tercapainya SDG 17, yaitu kemitraan untuk mencapai tujuan, melalui kolaborasi antara akademisi dan praktisi kesehatan dalam menciptakan solusi untuk mempercepat deteksi, diagnosis, dan penanganan penyakit secara lebih efektif dan efisien.
