Mahasiswa Universitas Gadjah Mada Sabet Gold Medal dan Dua Penghargaan dalam iGEM Competition 2023 yang Diikuti oleh 66 Negara

Grand Jamboree-iGEM Competition adalah ajang lomba internasional bergengsi di bidang Synthetic Biology yang diikuti oleh lebih dari 400 tim dari 66 negara yang terdiri atas siswa SMA serta mahasiswa S1 dan S2 dari seluruh dunia. iGEM Competition berawal dari sebuah kegiatan summer school di Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) pada tahun 2003. Dalam dua dekade, iGEM Competition telah mendorong lahirnya inovasi riset, perusahaan, dan startup bioteknologi terkemuka seperti Ginkgo Bioworks, Asimov, dan Benchling.

Dalam iGEM Competition 2023, Tim UGM-Indonesia turut berpartisipasi dan membawakan projek bertema diagnostik dengan judul “Novel Biodevice for Colorectal Cancer Screening using Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (EcN) with miRNAs as Biomarker”. Salah satu mahasiswa MIPA yang tergabung dalam tim adalah Farrel Amroe Azhari (Ilmu Komputer). Farrel berkontribusi dalam prototyping, design dan pembuat code pada laman website tim iGEM UGM.

Tim berhasil merekayasa bakteri EcN untuk mendeteksi miR-92a dan miR-21 sebagai biomarker sel kanker kolorektal dan meningkatkan sensitivitas Loop-Initiated RNA Activator (LIRA) melalui pemodelan matematis dan simulasi komputer. Dalam mengembangkan proyek penelitian, tim iGEM melakukan diskusi dengan peneliti, stakeholders, dan instansi pemerintah, serta melakukan komunikasi dengan masyarakat pedesaan dan pasien kanker kolorektal. Tim juga melakukan pemberdayaan masyarakat secara inklusif dengan memberikan edukasi kepada masyarakat lokal, membuat poster dalam berbagai bahasa, dan mempublikasikan video dengan bahasa isyarat. Dari penelitian dan pemberdayaan masyarakat inilah tim meraih Gold Medal serta penghargaan Top 5 Best Diagnostics Project dan Inclusivity Award. Secara keseluruhan, tim UGM-Indonesia meraih prestasi berupa Gold Medal, Inclusivity Award, dan Top 5 Best Diagnostics Project pada ajang Grand Jamboree-International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Competition 2023, yang berlangsung di Paris, Prancis, pada tanggal 2-5 November 2023. Untuk pertama kalinya dalam 20 tahun berlangsungnya iGEM Competition, tim dari Indonesia berhasil meraih special award serta masuk dalam nominasi untuk best project, setelah sebelumnya pada tahun 2021, tim UGM-Indonesia berhasil memperoleh penghargaan Silver Medal.

Prestasi yang ditorehkan Tim UGM-Indonesia tidak terlepas dari dukungan Universitas Gadjah Mada, dosen DIKE Afiahayati, S.Kom., M.Cs., Ph.D, serta berbagai donatur dan sponsor yang turut mendukung kebutuhan tim.
