Program Doktor Ilmu Komputer Selenggarakan Guest Lecture dengan Topik From Emojis to Emotions: How Machines Learn to Understand Meaning

Yogyakarta, 27 Oktober 2025 – Program Studi Doktor Ilmu Komputer, Departemen Ilmu Komputer dan Elektronika (DIKE) FMIPA UGM, menyelenggarakan Guest Lecture dengan topik “From Emojis to Emotions: How Machines Learn to Understand Meaning.” Kegiatan ini menghadirkan Dr. Phillip Smith, Associate Professor sekaligus Head of Student Development and Support di School of Computer Science, University of Birmingham, Inggris. Dr. Smith membahas bagaimana mesin belajar mengenali makna dan emosi dari bahasa manusia melalui pendekatan Natural Language Processing (NLP).

Acara dibuka oleh Wahyono, S.Kom., Ph.D., selaku Ketua Departemen Ilmu Komputer dan Elektronika, yang menyampaikan apresiasi atas terselenggaranya kegiatan ini sebagai sarana memperluas wawasan riset mahasiswa doktoral dalam bidang NLP dan kecerdasan buatan. Sambutan kemudian dilanjutkan oleh Dr. Moh. Edi Wibowo, S.Kom., M.Kom., Sekretaris Program Studi Doktor Ilmu Komputer, yang menyampaikan pentingnya keterlibatan mahasiswa dalam forum akademik internasional untuk memperkaya perspektif penelitian dan kolaborasi.

Dalam pemaparannya, Dr. Phillip Smith menjelaskan bagaimana NLP mengajarkan komputer untuk memahami makna dari teks, hingga emosi. Ia memaparkan contoh penerapan NLP seperti pendeteksian konten berbahaya di media sosial, sistem rekomendasi berbasis ulasan, hingga chatbot yang mampu mengenali kebutuhan emosional pengguna. Dr. Smith juga menyoroti bagaimana model bahasa modern mulai beralih dari sekadar memahami struktur gramatikal menjadi lebih sensitif terhadap konteks dan emosi.

Lebih lanjut, Dr. Smith membahas risetnya mengenai peran emoji dalam analisis sentimen. Ia memperkenalkan konsep emoji sentiment roles yang memandang emoji bukan sekadar simbol dengan nilai positif atau negatif, melainkan elemen kontekstual yang dapat mengubah makna sebuah pesan. Dalam penelitiannya, terdapat sebelas peran emosi emoji yang berbeda, menunjukkan bahwa emoji memiliki fungsi semantik yang dinamis dan penting dalam memahami emosi manusia di dunia digital.

Selain itu, ia juga menjelaskan berbagai arah penelitian NLP di University of Birmingham, seperti analisis bahasa figuratif, aspect-based sentiment analysis, penerapan NLP di bidang kesehatan dan psikologi, serta isu dan keandalan pada large language models (LLM). Dr. Smith menekankan pentingnya konteks dan keberagaman bahasa, karena tanpa dasar kontekstual yang kuat, model berisiko salah memahami humor, sarkasme, atau ekspresi budaya tertentu.

Sesi dilanjutkan dengan tanya jawab yang berlangsung aktif. Beberapa peserta mengajukan pertanyaan mengenai pengolahan emoji dalam tokenisasi bahasa, penelitian untuk low-resource languages, hingga bagaimana mesin menghasilkan keluaran yang dapat dimengerti manusia. Acara diakhiri dengan sesi foto bersama seluruh peserta dan narasumber.

Kegiatan ini turut mendukung implementasi Tujuan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan (SDGs), khususnya SDG 4 (Pendidikan Berkualitas) melalui peningkatan literasi riset dan SDG 9 (Inovasi dan Infrastruktur) melalui pengembangan riset teknologi berbasis AI yang etis dan bertanggung jawab.
