Penyelenggaraan Program Studi Ilmu Komputer dimulai pada tahun 1987, di bawah koordinasi Jurusan Matematika Fakultas MIPA UGM. Mulai tahun 2010, penyelenggaraan Program Studi Ilmu Komputer dikoordinasikan oleh Jurusan Ilmu Komputer dan Elektronika, yang sekarang menjadi Departemen Ilmu Komputer dan Elektronika. Saat ini Departemen Ilmu Komputer dan Elektronika FMIPA UGM menyelenggarakan kegiatan pendidikan dan pengajaran dalam rangka menyiapkan 3 (tiga) jenjang kepakaran bidang ilmu komputer, meliputi: (1) Sarjana ilmu komputer (dengan gelar S.Kom.), (2) Magister ilmu komputer dengan gelar (M.Cs.), dan (3) Doktor dalam bidang ilmu komputer dengan gelar (Dr.).
